California Miniature
Schnauzer Rescue
—Rescued Dogs In New Homes 2014
California Miniature Schnauzer Rescue re-homed more than 110 Miniature Schnauzers and other dogs during 2014, including many seniors, many dogs with behavior problems, and more broken limb dogs than we have ever taken in a single year before. The year also featured a new partnership with Hope for Paws, which allowed the two organizations to save several dogs that neither could have saved on their own.
We thank our volunteers, our fosters, and our donors. Without their wonderful help, many of those dogs would have died instead of enjoying their lives in great new homes.

Oreo is neutered and up to date on immunizations.

Rescue Schnauzers Diamond and Bentley
Bentley, 11 years old (in front of photo), and Diamond, 9 years old (in back of photo), were surrendered because of a divorce in the family. Normally, it is tough to find homes for seniors and especially when the goal is to place two together, But Bentley and Diamond lucked out big time. One thing that they had going for them was that they are both housebroken and good with children.
Bentley and Diamond play a lot. They are both incredibly strong, alert, and have good eyesight and hearing. Diamond has to have Bentley in her sight at all time. If he moves even slightly, she alerts
Bentley and Diamond were adopted on December 6, 2014 by a family from Dayton, NV, where they have fitted in quickly.

Bella is currently wearing an Elizabethan collar because her right front paw is injured and bandaged. She should be fine soon though. Bella needs a dental, as is typical of older Schnauzers. Mateo was very scared but not at all growly or snappy when we got him. He let us look him over without complaint, so we expect he will be a happy little guy as soon as he sees he is loved and not in danger. He does like other dogs.
Mateo appears to be in good health. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. We also had his retained puppy teeth removed.

Curtis appears to be in good health except for some patchy skin which we are treating him for. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. We've just had his teeth cleaned. Pearl is an absolute doll! She is quiet as can be and rarely barks unless she is playing with the ball. She gets along fine with the other dogs at her foster home.
Pearl would be perfect for a retired person and would do well with someone in an apartment or condo. She is content with playing with toys and loves to pull all the toys out of the toy box one by one. A short walk around the block each day is about all the exercise she would need. She loves to cuddle up on your lap.
Pearl currently sleeps in a big dog bed but would LOVE to sleep on her owner's bed.
Pearl is great company and loves to hang out near whoever is in the room. She walks nicely on a leash, and has an excellent recall. If you are out in the yard with her, she sticks close by.

Rescue Schnauzer Lauren
Lauren is a super sweet 8 year old Miniature Schnauzer who weighs 13 lbs. We rescued Lauren from the Lancaster shelter. She has cropped ears and a docked tail.
When we took Lauren to the vet, we learned that she has a Grade 4 heart murmur and cloudiness in her lenses that could be the beginning of cataracts. We were concerned that we would have trouble finding her a suitable adopter because of those problems. As it turns out, we were pulling a senior terrier mix named Hazel from the Baldwin Park shelter the next day for our friends at Muttville in San Francisco. We asked if they'd take Lauren too and they kindly said yes.
Thanks to arrangements made with Pilets and Paws by our friend Alison Doolin, both dogs flew north to San Jose. One of our fosters in northern California kindly, agreed to drive Lauren and Hazel from the San Jose Airport to Muttville.

Rescue Schnauzer Maggie
Maggie is a purebred Miniature Schnauzer who was about 8 months old as of mid-July 2014. Maggie was adopted from the SEAACA shelter by a couple who both worked there. They surrendered Maggie to us because she had chronic diarrhea and they could not afford the testing to find the cause.
After we got Maggie, we gave her the normal treatments, but they did not solve the problem. We had a number of tests ran, all of which came back negative.
Our vet suggested she might have Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, caused by her pancreas failing to to produce enough of the enymes needed to digest food. The treatment is adding enzymes to food. We tried it and Maggie's problem disappeared within a couple of days. However, she will likely need to stay on the enzymes for the rest of her life. (The cost of the enzymes is $135 per kilo, which is more than a 2-year's supply for Maggie.) For more information on the disorder and treatment, see http://www.enzymediane.com/faq.htm
Maggie is an affectionate, happy girl who gets along well with other dogs.
Maggie has natural ears and a docked tail.

He is smart, but would do well with a little more training regarding jumping on people and walking correctly on lead. Cooper is lovable, good with other dogs and children. He will chase cats, however. Cooper loves attention and has an outgoing personality! He would do well having a fenced yard in which to release some of his energy, and loves to be taken for daily walks.

Rescue "Poosett Hound" Audi
We are not sure what Audi is. He looks like he could be a Poodle / Basset Hound combo, so we are calling him a Pooset Hound. We rescued Audi from the San Diego shelter which had called him a Schnauzer mix, but he does not appear to us to have any Schnauzer in him. He is about 1 year old. He weighs about 20 to 25 lbs.
Whatever his parentage, Audi is effusively playful and friendly, definitely still a puppy in his outlook. In fact, we had a hard time getting photos of him because Audi is a perpetual motion machine whenever there is someone around who Audi thinks might be willing to play with him. We were able to catch him flying through the air, but the shutter speed wasn't fast enough to freeze him!
Audi appears to be in good health. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations.

Sara does get along with other dogs.
Sara is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations.

PJ gets along with other dogs and appears to be okay with cats. We have not had him around young children yet but we think he would be fine with children who are gentle.
PJ is neutered and up to date on vaccinations, except for rabies. He will be given a rabies shot before placement,

He is a happy boy, who wags his tail and likes to play fetch.
Kyland walks fairly well on lead, but pulls a bit in anticipation. He likes meeting new people and appreciates all the attention he can get. We have not had Kyland around cats or children yet. Kyland appears to be house broken and is learning to use the doggie door. He is crate trained, and appreciates a nice comfy doggie bed.
Kyland is neutered, heartworm negative. His canine teeth were scaled (tartar removed). The vet said Kyland would need to have his teeth cleaned at some point, but not immediately.

Rescue Schnauzer Charlie
This is Charlie, a purebred male neutered Miniature Schnauzer. He is about 6 years old but has the spunk and vigor of a much younger dog.
Charlie is funny, and animated. This boy “LOVES” to play fetch with his ball!!! You could easily exchange this game for walking exercise. You will tire before he does! He also keeps himself very busy playing with his toys!
Charlie is better as a single dog, He does not mind other dogs but has no interest in them and does not play with them at all. He likes cats but will chase them on occasion. He does NOT do well with small children but he loves to play with older children who know how to handle him gently and not pick him up roughly. He is a bit frightened when being handled.
Charlie is a lovely dog, fun to play with, nice to cuddle with. He is kennel trained, house trained, great in the car, and on walks on or off the leash. Good when being groomed as well. He will be sadly missed by his foster when he is adopted.
Charlie appears to be in good health. He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations.
Charlie was adopted by a retired couple from Sonoma on February 5, 2014.
Rescue Schnauzer Puppy Raylan
Raylan is a young male Miniature Schnauzer who was found running the streets. He was unkempt, dirty, with masses of tangles and mats in his salt and pepper coat. There were no replies to the many attempts to locate his family, so Schnauzer Rescue took him in.
Raylan is about 9 months old so he is still very much a puppy. He weighs 15.6 lbs., about average for a male Miniature Schnauzer.
Raylan will need all the basic training to be a canine good citizen, and his foster family has already started working with him. He is about 80% housetrained and getting more reliable every day. He now knows how to use the dog door, is learning how to sit on command, and sleeps in a crate at night. He rides well in a crate in the car.
Raylan is very affectionate and loves to be with people, and curl up by your side. He gets along well with other dogs and would do well in a home with another dog as a buddy. He has now had a makeover at the groomers. Raylan is an absolute doll of a dog who deserves a new forever home.

Raylan was adopted on February 2, 2014 by a family from Danville who has owned Schnauzers before.

Rescue Schnauzer Willi and Puppy Nikki
Willi is a sweet, playful purebred female Miniature Schnauzer who is about 2 years old. She is average in size for a female Miniature Schnauzer. Nikki is a young female puppy who is about 3 months old as of January 15. She appears to be a mix of dappled Dachshund and Miniature Pinscher. Our best guess is that Nikki will mature out at less than 10 lbs.
Theirs is a remarkable tale of love and survival. They were dumped at a citrus nursery outside of Bakersfield. The kind people at the nursery put out food for them but it was two weeks before the scared dogs could be caught and brought indoors—and it gets very cold there at night. Willi had a pretty good growth of coat, but Nikki is tiny and has a smooth coat. She would never have survived were it not for Willi taking care of her.
Willi and Nikki appear to be very closely bonded. We will not separate them after what they have been through together. They came as a pair, and we will only place them as a pair. See their videos at https://vimeo.com/83981000 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsFVe5RX02M
Willi and Nikki are both extremely friendly with people and with other dogs. The fact that Nikki's tail is blurred in the photo gives you an idea of how fast she was wagging it!
Both Willi and Nikki appear to be in good health. Willi was dirty and matted when we got her. Nikki was absolutely clean, probably due in large part to Willi's care.
Willi is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Nikki is microchipped and up to date on DA2P and bordatella vaccinations. She will be placed on a spay/neuter agreement.
Willi and Nikki were adopted on January 26, 2014 by a couple from Carlsbad. The wife had formerly owned Schnauzers and the husband had formerly owned Dachshunds. We wish Willi and Nikki long and happy lives together.

Rescue Schnauzer Sulley
Sulley is a 10 year old white Miniature Schnauzer who we rescued from the San Jose Animal Shelter. He has cropped ears and a docked tail.
Sulley quickly found a comfortable niche in his foster home with his two Standard Schnauzer foster brothers. He immediately started showing off his skills and good habits. He is extremely intelligent and can quickly learn new commands in addition to showing off the ones he already knows. He is housebroken and crate trained.
Sulley likes other dogs as well as people, loves to play, take car rides and walks, and is good on a leash. For a 10-year-old he has good energy for walks and a little play time in the backyard. He currently walks about a mile a day with his foster family and plays for about 30 minutes in the backyard with his foster brothers (two 2-year-old Standard Schnauzers). Sulley does not bark much except when he sees another dog when he is on his leash.
Sulley appears to be in good health. Sulley has been neutered. He is current on his vaccinations and has been microchipped.
Sulley was adopted by a family from Aptos on January 17, 2014. He joins an 8 year old Flat Coated Retriever who is quickly becoming Sulley's new best friend.

Rescue Schnauzer Miss Daisy (formerly Sophie)
Miss Daisy (formerly Sophie) is our second rescue of 2014. Miss Daisy is a 1 1/2 year old female Miniature Schnauzer who came into the Bakersfield shelter on December 20, 2013—not a great place to spend Christmas. However, her luck changed quickly. We found out about her on December 31, and later that day received an adoption application from a couple in Bakersfield. We suggested they go see Sophie. As soon as the shelter opened on Jan. 2nd, they were there to adopt Sophie (now called “Miss Daisy”).
Miss Daisy's adopters say she is gentle and loving and playful. She slept peacefully all through her first night at home with them.
Miss Daisy is pictured with her adopters, leaving the shelter, and at Petco with her slightly belated Christmas gifts.
Rescue Terrier Toby
Toby is a super friendly terrier mix who we rescued from the Lancaster shelter along with his pal (and likely his brother) Tommy. The shelter estimated Toby's age at 1 year. He weighs 25 to 30 lbs.
Toby loves people and gets along with other dogs. We have not had him around young children but he'd probably be fine with them.
Toby appears to be in good health. He is neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations.
Toby was adopted with a nursing student and her mom in San Jose on January 2, 2014. He will have a Siamese cat for company.
Toby missed watching the 2014 Rose Parade in his new home by one day, but was still adopted quickly enough to be our first placement of 2014.
